Work on the Trail is heating up with two major extensions and storm damage repairs underway, making the most of summer’s great weather. Track construction began earlier this month on the Te Aroha to Matamata leg of the trail, following a blessing by Kaumatua Mokoroa Gillett. For now hedge removal, fence construction, landscaping, signage and six new bridges will keep the team busy ahead of the official opening.
At the other end of the trail, construction of the 10km stretch linking Kaiaua township to Pūkorokoro-Miranda is a step closer with the completion of preliminary plans, and the 2kms of the Pūkorokoro-Miranda to Kopu section of the trail, washed out in last year’s storm will be repaired at the same time. Visitors will soon be spoilt for choice with options for adventures and sight-seeing, enjoying the Shorebird Coast, shopping in Thames, Karangahake Gorge, or Hobbiton.
