Two Trail Closures For Karangahake Gorge

We are currently working hard to coordinate two jobs in the Karangahake area to minimise disruption to riders.  We will endeavour for these works to be finished by Labour Weekend, if not prior.

The Waikino to Waihi section of the Trail will be open from mid-morning today and is safe to ride in time for the weekend. The Paeroa to Karangahake will be open for the weekend as from 5pm this evening Friday 16 October, however will close again 7.30am Monday 19 October. This section is likely to remain closed during working hours until Thursday 22 October. During the week, it will be open from 5pm each day and close again the following day at 7.30am until further notice.

Closure One

12-22 October 2020 -  Paeroa to Karangahake

We will be clearing the trees above the trail that were damaged in the July storms.  The trail will be closed for 2 kilometres west of the Tunnel as you head towards Paeroa.  Riders will NOT be able to pass through this section during these works.

Trail users will be able to access the trail between the Crown Hill Bridge and the Waikino Station, but will not be able to travel to Paeroa on the trail network.  We will re open this section as soon as it is safe to do so.  The total closure will allow us to minimise the total time needed to clear the trees.

Please note for Closure 1 ONLY (Paeroa to Karangahake), the Trail will reopen each night from 5pm and close again at 7.30am the following morning.

Closure Two - THESE WORKS ARE NOW COMPLETED & THE TRAIL IS SAFE FOR RIDERS

12-20 October 2020 - Twin Bridges Slump

We will be installing a new bridge at the area affected by the Slump.  Users will be able to ride as far as the cutting from Waihi but NO further.   From Waikino users will be able to ride to Karangahake but not east to Waihi.  Please use the train as a workaround if you are needing to get to/from Waihi during this time.
