Our teams are out checking for storm damage across the entire Trail Network. Please ride carefully and contact us via Facebook or email if you come across any hazards.
When the temperatures drop and the days get shorter, it’s tempting to pack away the bike and hibernate until spring. But winter riding has plenty of benefits for both your body and mind, and with the right mindset and gear, it can be just as enjoyable as a summer spin.
Health & Happiness on Two Wheels
Cycling through winter isn’t just about fitness, it’s a boost for your mental health too. Exercise releases endorphins, those feel-good hormones that help fend off the winter blues. A brisk ride gets the blood pumping, improves circulation, and keeps your immune system strong, making it easier to fight off colds. Plus, fresh air and natural light help maintain energy levels and regulate sleep patterns, even on grey days.

Mild Waikato Winters
Unlike some parts of New Zealand, the Waikato region enjoys a temperate climate, meaning frost and extreme cold are rare. Most winter days are perfect for riding - just layer up and go. The Hauraki Rail Trail is a great all-weather option, with mostly flat terrain and a mix of scenic countryside, historic sites, and cosy cafés to warm up along the way.

Regardless of whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or simply looking for an easy escape close to home, the Trail has something to offer for all ages and abilities. Here’s how to make the most of it, with an hour, an afternoon, or an entire weekend to spare.
One Hour:
If you’re pressed for time, head to Waikino and take a short ride to the Owharoa Falls and back. It’s just 3km return, but the scenery packs a punch. Cascading after rain and surrounded by native bush, the falls are a true winter gem. Bring a thermos or pop into the Waikino Station Café for a warming hot chocolate or coffee.
An Afternoon:
With a little more time up your sleeve, you can explore the Karangahake Gorge by bike or on foot. The Paeroa to Waikino section of the Trail is a local favourite, rich in gold mining history and natural beauty. Cross swing bridges, venture through the historic rail tunnel, and soak up dramatic gorge views. Follow it up with lunch at the Waikino Hotel or take a detour to Paeroa’s antique shops and eateries.
A Weekend:
For the ultimate getaway, turn your day trip into a cosy weekend escape with a stay at the Ruru PurePod in Waikino. Nestled on a hillside with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, this luxury off-grid cabin is the ultimate winter hideaway. Stargaze in silence, wake to birdsong, and explore more of the Trail by day. For an extra adventure, visit the Waihi Gold Discovery Centre, or head to the beachside town of Waihi Beach for brunch at the Flatwhite Café before heading home.

5 Winter Adventures on and Around the Hauraki Rail Trail
Crisp mornings, misty landscapes, and fewer crowds make for an unforgettable adventure. Whether you're after a gentle day ride or a weekend escape, here are five winter experiences to inspire your next outing.
1. Warm Up with a Ride and a Hot Soak
There's nothing like a brisk winter ride followed by a relaxing dip in warm mineral waters. Cycle from Paeroa to Te Aroha (21km), taking in the stunning Kaimai backdrop, then reward yourself with a soak at the Te Aroha Mineral Spas. The naturally heated soda springs provide the ultimate post-ride recovery.
2. A Cosy Café Ride
Winter is made for hearty meals and steaming cups of coffee. Ride the Thames to Paeroa section (34km) and enjoy the charming cafés along the way. Stop at The Cheese Barn in Matatoki for organic cheese and coffee, or treat yourself to a hot pie in Paeroa. No matter the weather, a café ride makes for a satisfying day out.
3. Karangahake Gorge in its Winter Glory
The Karangahake Gorge is breathtaking year-round, but winter adds an extra layer of atmosphere. Mist hangs low over the river, waterfalls are at their most powerful, and the historic rail tunnel feels even more mysterious. This section of the Trail is a must for walkers and riders alike.
4. Take a Coastal Escape
For a winter adventure with a seaside twist, head to Waihi Beach. Ride the Waihi to Waikino section (10km) and then make your way to the coast, where you can enjoy a beachside walk before warming up with fish and chips. Fewer crowds mean more space to enjoy the stunning scenery.
5. Family Fun on the Trail
Winter riding with the kids? Keep it short and fun. The Paeroa to Waikino section (14km) is a great choice, offering a mix of gentle terrain, historic tunnels, and a stop at Waikino Station Café. Pack warm layers, bring a thermos of hot chocolate, and make a day of it.
Embrace the Chill and Keep Riding
Winter doesn’t have to mean the end of adventure. With the right layers, a good plan, and a warm treat at the finish line, there’s every reason to keep exploring. So grab your bike, breathe in the crisp air, and discover the Hauraki Rail Trail in a whole new light.
