Winter Wandering On The Hauraki Rail Trail

There’s no better way to slow down and reconnect than a winter wander along the Hauraki Rail Trail. When temperatures drop and the pace of life slows, it’s the perfect time to rediscover what’s in your own backyard.

Stretching from Kaiaua in the North to Matamata in the South, the Hauraki Rail Trail offers locals and visitors a chance to embrace the crisp air, soak up the seasonal scenery, and enjoy the warmth of small-town hospitality. With fewer people on the Trail and nature putting on a moody, misty show, winter brings a unique charm to the ride.

Regardless of whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or simply looking for an easy escape close to home, the Trail has something to offer for all ages and abilities. Here’s how to make the most of it, with an hour, an afternoon, or an entire weekend to spare.

One Hour:

If you’re pressed for time, head to Waikino and take a short ride to the Owharoa Falls and back. It’s just 3km return, but the scenery packs a punch. Cascading after rain and surrounded by native bush, the falls are a true winter gem. Bring a thermos or pop into the Waikino Station Café for a warming hot chocolate or coffee.

An Afternoon:

With a little more time up your sleeve, you can explore the Karangahake Gorge by bike or on foot. The Paeroa to Waikino section of the Trail is a local favourite, rich in gold mining history and natural beauty. Cross swing bridges, venture through the historic rail tunnel, and soak up dramatic gorge views. Follow it up with lunch at the Waikino Hotel or take a detour to Paeroa’s antique shops and eateries.

A Weekend:

For the ultimate getaway, turn your day trip into a cosy weekend escape with a stay at the Ruru PurePod in Waikino. Nestled on a hillside with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, this luxury off-grid cabin is the ultimate winter hideaway. Stargaze in silence, wake to birdsong, and explore more of the Trail by day. For an extra adventure, visit the Waihi Gold Discovery Centre, or head to the beachside town of Waihi Beach for brunch at the Flatwhite Café before heading home.
