Ride the Seasons on the Hauraki Rail Trail

No two rides on the Hauraki Rail Trail are ever the same. That’s the beauty of a journey shaped by nature. With each passing season, the landscape transforms, offering fresh sights, smells, sounds and sensations. Whether you’re pedalling under a summer sun, crunching through golden autumn leaves, or chasing waterfalls in spring, there’s always something new to discover.

The Trail stretches across coast, farmland, forest and gorge, making it one of the most diverse cycling experiences in Aotearoa. And just like the scenery, your ride can adapt too. Slow and scenic or fast and full of adventure, short hops or multi-day trips, it all depends on when you ride and what you’re after. So, when’s the best time to go? Honestly… all four seasons.

Start with our easy spring ride at the end of this blog, to awaken your senses and reconnect with the Trail. It’s the perfect low-effort adventure to dust off the bike and get back in the saddle. As you soak in the beauty of the season, let it inspire you to plan ahead, each stretch of the Trail offers something unique as the year unfolds. From autumn golds to summer swims and winter mists, use your spring ride as a springboard to research, map out, and book a year of memorable rides.

Spring

Ride through a world bursting to life, think wildflowers lining the track, lambs frolicking in the paddocks, and crisp mornings that warm into perfect picnic days.

Summer

Summer is all about long, golden days made for cycling. Take a refreshing dip in the river at Karangahake Gorge, stop for berry ice cream, and cruise under shady canopies and listen to the cicadas.

Autumn

Autumn offers a painter’s palette of rich reds, golds, and oranges. The Trail glows with colour, the air is cool and calm, and it’s perfect for slower rides with photo stops, vineyard visits, and warm café treats.

Winter

Winter brings clear, crisp days with dramatic mountain views, misty mornings, and fewer crowds. Layer up and enjoy peaceful solitude, with hot coffee stops and steaming mineral pools waiting at the end of your ride.

Your Next Ride is Just a Season Away

Whether you’re chasing cherry blossoms, autumn colour, summer swims, or winter solitude, the Hauraki Rail Trail is ready to ride all year round. Pack your layers, plan your stops, and let the seasons shape your cycling adventure.

Spring Ride Itinerary: Waihi to Karangahake Gorge Return

Start your day in Waihi with a morning coffee at a local café. Try the Waikino Station Café for great food and trail-side charm. The spring air is crisp, the sun's warm, and blossoms line the route as you ride alongside the Ohinemuri River.

Cycle through lush bush and regenerating forest as you head into the dramatic Karangahake Gorge. Spring is the perfect time to enjoy the Gorge’s waterfalls and birdlife. Keep an eye out for tūī and fantails in the trees.

Park up at the Karangahake Windows Walk and take a short stroll through gold mining tunnels and across swing bridges. It’s shady and magical this time of year, with mossy rock faces and bursts of new green growth.

Lunch at the Falls Retreat is a must if open, or pack a picnic to enjoy near the river. Ride back to Waihi in the afternoon sun with that satisfied springtime glow.
