Rail Trail Tales With Michael Tansey At Hauraki Bike Hire

Michael Tansey is a familiar face to many who visit or ride the Hauraki Rail Trail. Based in Paeroa, Michael has been a long-time supporter and advocate for the Trail, running Hauraki Bike Hire and managing the town’s Information Hub with dedication and heart. With a wealth of local knowledge and a passion for showcasing the region, Michael has helped countless visitors make the most of their cycling adventures.

The move to new premises on Wharf Street was a natural step for Michael as the business continued to grow. Now positioned right beside the Trail, Hauraki Bike Hire offers riders an even more convenient starting point, with plenty of parking and easy access to set off on their journey. It’s a location that perfectly matches the business’s expanding services and its commitment to making every ride as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Now, with the recent acquisition of Valley Tours and Transfers, Michael’s business is shifting gears. He’s taking on the management of shuttles and transfers across the Trail network and rolling out a fresh new brand to reflect the growth. We caught up with him to learn more about the journey so far, what’s next for the business, and why the Hauraki Rail Trail remains close to his heart.

You’ve been involved with the Hauraki Rail Trail for many years. What originally drew you to set up Hauraki Bike Hire?

We saw the chance to expand our offering to include daily bike hire, as we sit at the very hub of the Trail, with three of the five Sections coming in and out of Paeroa.

What inspired the decision to acquire Valley Tours and Transfers, and how will this expansion change things for your business?

This is a natural fit, as clients always request a shuttle option for the Trail. We have worked with Valley Tours and Transfers for a number of years, and so it works easily into the offering we are heading towards.

Tell us a bit about the rebrand. What can we expect and what does it reflect about your vision going forward?

We are taking some time to look at both sides of our business, and see where we can improve our offering, possibly adding more products - tours, shuttles, bike hire. We feel it is the right time to look at our branding, stepping into a bright future of tourism.

You’ve helped thousands of riders explore the Trail. What do you love most about seeing others discover it?

We know that we live, play and work in the best part of New Zealand (maybe a little one eyed), but I still get a kick when I see people and their smiles after they’ve had a day out exploring our piece of paradise.

What does a typical day look like for you now, juggling bike hire, shuttles, and the Paeroa Info Hub?

I enjoy meeting and helping people. So most days, although it’s work, it’s also a lot of fun. You never know what type of day you’re going to have. People dropping in to get info about the town and district, JP work calls for pick ups, bike hire etc. Every day is different.

What have been some of the biggest changes you’ve seen on the Trail over the years, and where do you think it’s heading?

The Trail has now become a destination to come and enjoy. It’s most definitely a place to visit - a must-do. Every year it gets better with new offerings and updates happening, and to see all the planning coming together is amazing.

We now have a lot more overseas visitors, as the Trail has been well promoted in the overseas markets. I only see this as getting busier.

What would you say to someone considering riding the Trail for the first time?

Please take your time, and enjoy our amazing Trail. There is something for every age group.

With this exciting new chapter underway, where’s the best place for people to follow your journey and stay updated on what’s coming next?

Follow us on Facebook, and keep an eye on the website - either Hauraki Bike Hire or Valley Tours and Transfers. Pop in to see us in Paeroa. The Hub of the Hauraki Rail Trail is at 6 Wharf Street. We’ll do our best to help you, and if we can’t, we’ll find someone who can. We’re looking forward to seeing you all out and about on the Trail.
