Tsunami Advisory – Strong & Unusual Currents Expected. Following a magnitude 8.7 earthquake near Kamchatka, Russia, a National Advisory has been issued for coastal areas of Aotearoa New Zealand, including those along and near the Hauraki Rail Trail. If you're out riding or exploring today, please take extra care around rivers, estuaries, and coastal areas. Strong and unpredictable currents and surges may occur, making conditions dangerous. Stay out of the water, keep clear of beaches, rivers, and shorelines, and avoid harbours, marinas, and estuaries. Even if the weather seems calm, these unusual conditions can pose a serious risk to anyone near the water. Please stay safe and follow official updates from civildefence.govt.nz and the National Emergency Management Agency. If you are planning to ride over the next few days, please check the weather prior to leaving. Heavy rain and strong winds may bring trees down. Please contact us via Facebook or email if you come across any hazards.

Trail Trilogy 2019

6 towns, 5 start lines, 1 finish line, 140km off road, and 1 day of flat out fun if you’re ready to take part in the 2019 Trail Trilogy.  With something for everyone, this super event takes place on the Hauraki Rail Trail on Sunday 15 September 2019.

The Trail Trilogy courses offer popular running distances and cater for runners, walkers, individuals and teams.  There are five events, a 9k fun run, Half Marathon, Marathon, 55k Intro Ultra, and 100k Ultra Marathon, which utilise the entire length of the rail trail.

If you're looking for a fun experience with a group of friends or colleagues, why not put a team together for the marathon or ultra-marathon races.  All 5 events start at different locations (Kaiaua, Thames, Te Aroha, Paeroa, Waikino), with all events finishing at Waihi's historic train station.

A new Event, Race the Train was introduced in 2018.  This great option for families starts with a free train ride from Waihi Station to the start line at Waikino.  The fun race includes the underpass and Ohinemuri River foot-bridge, before heading upstream chasing the train all the way to the finish line at Waihi Station.

Waihi’s Trilogy Events created the Trail Trilogy in 2017.  The vision was to get people of all ages active, and to promote the Hauraki Region through the Rail Trail.  The event has attracted over 500 entrants each year, and is expected to grow due to its appeal to runners and walkers of all ages.

The Hauraki Region is a great place for a fun group weekend away.  If you think there’s an event for you, you’ll find more information and registration details here.
