After four years of closures due to major stop-bank upgrades by Waikato Regional Council, a key section of the Hauraki Rail Trail has officially reopened, reconnecting Waitakaruru to Kopu.
The reopening of Section A is a significant milestone for both the Trail and the wider Hauraki community. This coastal stretch, renowned for its open skies, thriving birdlife, and sweeping views of the Firth of Thames, is once again open to cyclists and walkers.
While some final remedial works are still underway between Pipiroa and Kopu to improve the marine clay surface, the Trail is fully passable and ready to ride.

The closure was part of a significant flood protection initiative funded by the Crown Infrastructure Programme. Essential stop-bank upgrades were carried out to safeguard surrounding farmland and communities.
Hauraki Rail Trail CEO Diane Drummond said, "This is a major milestone after four years of closure, and we are so grateful for the support and patience of our local community.”
Wellington-based Angus & Associates calculated the economic loss directly due to the closure was between $750,000 and $1million.
“Now that the Trail is open again, we see that money flowing back into community where it belongs” said Drummond.

The reopening is a welcome relief for local businesses that cater to trail users. Cafes, lodges, and tour operators along the route, many of whom have weathered reduced visitor numbers during the closures, are once again open and eager to host visitors.
