Drilling Work Between Waihi Station And Waikino

Please be advised of the forthcoming Geotech works required on Section C of the Hauraki Rail Trail between Waihi Station and Waikino on the 18th & 22nd July 2019.  These works are for test drills into the track to observe what the material is like near the Waikino slip.

The Track will need to be closed while each of the test holes are drilled.  It is likely these intermittent closures will be for brief 15-20 minute slots at a time while the holes are drilled.  The exact number of holes required is unknown, however between test drills riders should be able to pass.

We suggest riders pack a hot flask and prepare for a brief stop.  Alternatively to avoid works completely riders can choose to take the train from Waihi Station to Waikino.  Details are below.

Take A Ride On The Goldfields Railway Train

Each one-way trip takes 30 minutes, with tickets available from both stations.  Most importantly there is a bike wagon on the train.

Stop off for a Devonshire scone at the Waikino Station Café.  Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy at the picturesque Owharoa Falls.  Or relax with a glass of wine over a leisurely lunch at one of the eateries in the Gorge.

Visitors can also enjoy the fascinating sites of Victoria Battery and the Victoria Battery Train and Museum.  Here you’ll find remains from what was once a vast industrial area.

There’s a variety of ticket options available, and children under 2 travel for free.  A Family pass costs $35 one way, or $55 provides a round-trip ticket for two adults and two children.  Great value for families and friends seeking an extra fun adventure on this section of the Rail Trail.

Wheelchair facilities are available on request, and four legged friends are welcome on a lead.  The Railway is Closed Wednesdays, but operates all other days including school holidays and Public Holidays.  A Timetable & Booking information can be found here.
