VISIT WEBSITE

Situated on the western plains of the Kaimai ranges, Matamata is the heartland of the Waikato.

Matamata has a strong dairy farming heritage and is well known for its thoroughbred horse race industry.

In 2002, Matamata became an internationally recognized visitor destination due its proximity to the Hobbiton Movie Set.  The Matamata i-site is one of the departure points for the Hobbiton Movie Set tour. Tours depart at regular intervals on a daily basis.

Take some time to visit the Firth Tower Museum. Set in park like grounds, visitors can gain an insight into the area's colonial farming activities.

Kaimai Cheese Company in Waharoa is a cheese producer making ‘top shelf’, natural cheeses.    Sample their cheese or enjoy the great food at their café.

A highlight for many is a walk the Wairere Falls which are set among the beautiful bush of the Kaimai Ranges.  The 1.8km track passes through native bush to the lookout platform with its impressive view of the falls.  Relax afterwards with a soak in the hot natural mineral pools at Opal Hot Springs.

Matamata has accommodation and restaurant options to suit everyone. Only two hours from Auckland, and one hour from Rotorua, Matamata is the perfect place to stop relax and enjoy rural New Zealand
