The Cheese Lovers Trail
Celebrate the dairy farming of the district, enjoying a variety of award winning cheeses, and locally inspired menus. Soak up the rural scenery as you meander the Hauraki Plains, while enjoying majestic views of the Coromandel Ranges.
Set off from the Paeroa Maritime Park, on this leisurely section of trail, taking in the rural tranquility and views towards the Hauraki Plains and Coromandel Ranges. This richly historic area was once only accessible via the two rivers, Waihou and Hikutaia.
Indulge in a long table lunch, cheeseboards and wine at one of the Coromandel's greatest treasures nestled in the countryside. Established in 1994, the iconic venue has produced many award-winning cheeses, and the eclectic Café is full of local memorabilia.
Optional - Ride a further 5.5km towards Kōpῡ to cross the usually closed Historic Kōpῡ Bridge, which crosses the Waihou River near Thames, and is the last remaining operational swing span bridge in New Zealand. Ride back across the new Kōpῡ Bridge, which has its foundations driven deep into the soft swampy riverbed. Take a moment to stop and admire the stunning views.
Pedal on to the farming township of Hikutaia, the Māori name for 'thrashing tail'. A traditional high tea featuring cheese will be served, while you relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery, tasty delights and jazz.
